New Song: And Can It Be (live)

Here is another "revived" hymn for my hymns project "Hymnody" that we are hoping to get completed later in 2012. This song will be joined by my versions of "Turn Your Eyes", "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross", "Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin" and others. This is another one of Charles Wesley's from 1739, "And Can It Be That I Should Gain".

Review of "Before You Sleep (Single)" (4/5)

"I've recently had the privilege to listen to his new single "Before You Sleep" from his upcoming release "The White Album." It has a great lullaby feel to the song. As a Christian father of three young daughters I love the inclusion of Scripture in the lyrics. Dawson's folk musical style is great for fans of Bebo Norman and Jason Gray..."

Review of "Before You Sleep (Single)" (3/5)

"Musically, Cowals sounds a little like a male Tracy Chapman. In fact, the track's simple, acoustic guitar-based arrangement sounds a little like Chapman's music back when "Fast Car" was a big pop hit. Cowals sings this song with an earnest, slightly pleading vocal style. Cowals has created a delightful song. It's one that is particularly aimed at insomniacs. If those that have trouble sleeping only knew how much God cares for them, watches over them and prepares new days for them, they might just rest a little easier..."

Review of "Turn Your Eyes (Single)" (3.5/5)

"Turn Your Eyes" is possessed of a simple sound; brushed drums, subtle bass, and finger-picked guitar. Cowals' skills are solid and the arrangement is refreshing and inviting, offering a new look at an old classic... like [Chris] Tomlin's "Amazing Grace" reinvention, Cowals' lyrical additions are light but powerful..."

New Song: Bulletproof (live)

This is a new song that I just wrote last week that uses the analogy of superheroes and their powers to demonstrate how not even they can stand up against, or separate us from the amazing power of God's love!

Nick and I have been sequestered in the studio the last few days making good progress on finishing songs for the new CD, "The White Album". As a humorous aside, the studio space has now moved to a location off Sleepy Hollow Road which is definitely odd timing considering it's Halloween in a few days.

Review of "Turn Your Eyes (Single)" (3.5/5)

"Turn Your Eyes" is a remake of "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," with its own little flare. This song will be featured on two of his upcoming albums, Hymnody and The White Album... this song I have actually grown to really like. He sounds like a newer version of Steven Curtis Chapman...

New Song: Come To The Table (live)

This is a new communion song that I just wrote last week that comes mostly straight from 1 Corinthians 11:23-34. It reminds us of why we take communion together as the body of Christ, to remember his sacrifice for us, the breaking of his body and shedding of his blood. Let us do this often in remembrance of him!

New Song: We'll Be Just Fine (live)

Here's another new love song I just wrote for my wife recently to commemorate our first 1000 days of marriage together. We were laughing because I keep asking her about things we did together or places we had been that we haven't been to yet. It seems we have always been together and my memories seem to keep re-writing themselves and putting her in memories we haven't shared yet!

So... this is perhaps a slightly off-kilter late night rambling about life, love, hope, faith and salvation. It may land a bit far of the bizarre line for some, but perhaps others will dig deeper and hear the truth and heart where it was coming from.

"The White EP" morphs into full-length "The White Album"

Sorry things have been crazy with Christmas and New Years. Just a quick update to let you know that we recorded the last 2 songs for the newest CD project over Christmas, so hopefully we will be able to get it released soon. Nick is swamped working on several other projects at the same time and busy with trips to LA, but hopefully we can wrap up production soon. I'll let everyone know when we have a firmer idea of a release date. The good news is that we've ended up getting a few more tracks together for this CD so it's going to be a full-length release instead of the originaly planned EP!

Music video for 'Same Star'
This is Dawson's 2nd "Official" music video, again filmed and edited by Jeff Huit. This song is from his collection of love songs entitled Looking Up At The Same Star. The video tells the story of how Dawson and his wife, Jessica, met and eventually got married. It features cameos from Jessica Cowals, Nick Garrett-Powell, Rayleigh Leavitt & her dog Rivers, and Joe Mistachkin.
For a limited time you can get my entire 11th album, Coffee Shop Songs (2008), featuring the songs "Yoke" and "Before The Sun Sets" for FREE! As one reviewer writes: "Cowals' tunes are full and captivating whether he is playing solo acoustic guitar or accompanied by a handful of other talented musicians. The multi-talented artist's flute work and lackadaisical vocal octave jumps throughout certain songs also give these Biblical verse driven tunes a Dave Matthews feel." If you enjoy the music, please tell your friends and use the 'Tip the Artist' feature to say thanks and support the music! I'm currently in the studio finishing my 13th CD due out Spring 2012.
