  • “Cowals’ tunes are full and captivating whether he is playing solo acoustic guitar or accompanied by a handful of other talented musicians. The multi-talented artist’s flute work and lackadaisical vocal octave jumps throughout certain songs also give these Biblical verse driven tunes a Dave Matthews feel.” —Kelly O’Neil

O Wondrous Cross (live)

  • · Old & New Hymns

This is a brand new song that I just wrote a few months ago (November 10, 2010). It is another one of my remixed hymns with a more modern melody and new chorus added. This is based on the hymn “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross” with a bridge taken from “Amazing Grace” and will be featured on my upcoming hymns project, “Hymnody” hopefully releasing sometime soon.

Lyrics

O Wondrous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died;
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride

O wondrous cross, O wondrous cross
Where love and sorrow gladly met
O wondrous cross

See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown.

O wondrous cross, O wondrous cross
Where love and sorrow gladly met
And placed a crown of thorns upon your head
Even to death you took my place
Now I am saved by amazing grace
O wondrous cross

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Once was blind but now I see
Amazing grace, so amazing

Based on the hymn “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross” by Isaac Watts in 1707, with bridge from “Amazing Grace” by John Newton in 1779.
